How has the Year Been?
So, we’ve opened a BRAND NEW SCHOOL! Hey Boxers, Mrs. Powers wants to know what you think!
Since you live in Las Vegas seeing a brand new school open is no big deal. But did you know that in most states this is a rarity? Why? Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. We build schools faster than most cities build Albertson’s. What I have loved about being the principal of a new school is getting to meet new kids, parents, and staff, as well as having the opportunity to decide how it’s going to be right off the bat. I have thoroughly enjoyed the 850 great kids who joke, laugh, learn, and “high 5” me throughout the day. I’m hoping that through this Blog you will continue to interact with me, keep me up to date on your life, and help me learn how to be an even better principal.
A few details….did you know that opening a school is a huge job? Mr. Welsh and I have been responsible for receiving millions of dollars of inventory, hiring people from the custodians to the teachers, choosing books from which you will learn, deciding which exploration classes to offer you, to block classes or not to block classes, how to keep you safe, your motto, your logo, your mascot, your school colors, etc. There is so much to think about (no wonder administrators can’t sleep)! Have you ever stopped to think about who makes up the rules about grading, homework, behavior expectations, lunchroom procedures, hallway passing , how teachers will talk to kids, how we want kids to talk to teachers, what we will ask teachers to offer you in the classroom every period of every day, etc.? THAT’S A LOT OF THINKING!
So, here we are in May, and I am wondering:
1. How was your first year at Escobedo M.S.?
2. Did you like coming to Escobedo M.S.?
3. Did you feel safe?
4. If you didn’t feel safe, what do we need to do differently next year?
5. If you could give me some advice for next year, what would it be?
6. Is there anything else I could do differently to help students enjoy school?
7. Will you remember your experience at Escobedo M.S. in a positive way? Why or why not?
8. Will you invite me to your high school graduation?!
To all 8th graders, I will miss you very much. You have been a very special part of this school’s opening. I am very proud of the accomplishments you have made this year and I hope you continue on your successful path. I will ask the principals at Centennial H.S. and Arbor View H.S. to check up on you! Whenever I see you out in the community, I will ask you if you remember the rest of “Be kind, be responsible, be the best you can be…” You are a wonderful group of teenagers. Remember always, “if the future seems overwhelming, remember that it comes one moment at a time.”

1. My first year at Escobedo MS was great I learned completely new things I learned how to play the bass and learned some cool games from PE.
2. Yes I did like coming to Escobedo not only because it was a brand new school but because the teachers are really nice.
3. At sometimes I didn’t because there were threats and rumors going throughout the school and some kids in PE put a log, string, and a sharp peice of tile in a locker and said that there was going to be a riot but these things were confiscated by Mr. Otis.
4.Just keep an eye on students and have locker checks.
5. I would not give you any advice because the school is running great just like I like but you could lower the price for lunch a little.
6. You can have a class on things like 3D animation.
7. Yes because it was a wonderful year and it was a new school and I like it very much.
8. I guess I would to show you how much I have acheved and so that I can thank you on having such a great 3 years at Escobedo MS.

3. well yes i’ve heard that we are not having that many fights at are school compared to the other schools. i’m nice to everyone i’ve never been in that kinda situation at this school.
4. maybe you could make the janitor drive that orange mini car. he could watch and make sure no one starts anything.
5.maybe lunch prices could go down just a little. and that you make sure that everyone loves this school next year. and the hals can be a little more calm than usual.
6.maybe you play soft music everyonece and a while. make sure that they listen so were it’s easy for them to do there work.
7.i wil remember it it rocks!

May 27th, 2008 at 9:32 amI actually think that this new school is great. I have all new friends and the teachers are great. My year here has been wonder ful and I get to come back next year. So what I think is that everybody should try it here. The music programs are awesome. My most favorite is the band. YEAH BAND!!!!

May 27th, 2008 at 9:49 amI love this new school it is a great starting M.S. for the Centennial area. The classes are fun and entertaining and the band, orchestra, and choir sound fantastic! GO BAND!!! Now I will answer your questions.
1. My first year was great how was yours?

3. I acually did feel safe for most of the time except for non-drill lockdowns.
4. I did feel safe.
5. The only advice that would say is to make the morining announcements a little more exciting.
6. Not much; Oh, except maybe the students should be allowed to have an extra lock on their locker.
7. Yes I will because it was fun fast year.
8. I am in 6th grade but I probably invite you when i am in high school

May 28th, 2008 at 2:47 pmOkay, Hellp Mrs. Principal! I think this is a wonderful idea! My first year..well i did loose friends. ANd i gained some.
But i never thought 6th grade would be like this. I kinda expected more, ya know?
Yes i did, but i wish gym class was longer and required ALL year long. Its fun, and kids need to get more fit. I didnt like Math much. It was too much homework even on the weekends. Even tho were kids, were still human and cant handle so much. Espessialy advanced math. She expects us to know it, but i would be happy if they actually explained it to us! I did feel safe, but i was annoyed by the bullies that might appear. And the immaturity of osme kids. That made me angry. They cant get along. So i think if we do more bully assignments kids will actually learn that its bad.
My advice is to actually talk to some kids, personal and in class. Somtimes its a drag, but it actually affects wut we have to say. I would probably remember becuase its Junior high? Everyone remmebers! Haha…anyway i would like some pleading requests!
CAN WE GET UNIFORMS!!!! MAKE IT A UNIFROM SCHOOL!
LIKE ON MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY. THURSDAY. AND FIRDAY WOULD BE WEAR WHAT YOU WANT BUT FOLLOWING SCHOOL POLICY. Everyone judges people on what they wear, thats immature. They want to keep in with fashion. Thats so messed up becuase there just following celebrities. So my idea for school uniforms are
Girls
Dark, navy blue (maybe) skirt. Pants are included if wanted
And then a sailor suit shirt.
(If u dont know what im talking about go to wikipedia and look up sailor outfit.)
Its an asian thing, and its the cutest most formal thing ever. Ive grown up wiht these and i think its awsome! It includes white socks knee-high, for girls who are uncomfortable with skirts.
Boys
Khaki pants, white collered shirt, blue jacket (suit type)
Ive always wanted it to be uniform school and i think it would be awsome!

I must say I’ve LOVED being at Escobdedo it was so much more efficent than my old elementry school. I like how we have had pep rallys, Dances and After School clubs this has by far been the greatest school year ever. I also like the design of the yearbook even if it had some Typos like mispelling of last names. Still it is a good yearbook altogether it’s been a great year and I strongly look forward to next year and the year after that. HAVE A GREAT SUMMER TO ALL OF EMS!!!

This school makes me safe and want to come to school everyday and learn. I like how we had dances, pep rally’s and school clubs. I lokk forward to coming here next year and the year after that. I’d have to say my favorite part of the year was going to all the basketball games, and cheering the boxers on. I can’t wait to be an eighth grader next year and come back to such an awesome school!

First of all, to start off, Escobedo MS rocks out loud.
Ok, so, to answer your questions:
1. My first year at Escobedo MS was amazing. I have never felt more involved, been more involved, or had more fun in a school before. All of my teachers are amazing, and everyone is very helpful and friendly.
2. I must say, I did not want to come here AT FIRST. I have always been the rebel whenever my family has moved, and I’ve never liked to think of the change. But, now that I’m here, I’m glad I came. I don’t want to go back to my old school, ever. I really am truly glad that my parents moved and forced me to come here. If they told me I could go back to my old middle school, I’d most definitely say no, because there is no place better than Escobedo.
3. I’ve always felt very safe here. No questions.
4. There’s nothing you need to do differently because I feel perfectly safe coming here.
5. There really isn’t anything that is negative that we could change, but maybe we could do more for the environment. I know we recycle paper here, but maybe we could start recycling more than just paper. Trees aren’t the only things we need to save, even though they might be the most important. If we would just recycle a bottle or two at lunch, then we would create a new t-shirt or save a whale from getting a bottle stuck in his digestive system (I don’t know if that last fact is true, just making a point). Anyway, maybe if the kids who buy gatorade bottles and drink them recycle them instead of just throwing them away, we could reward them for recycling by giving them a head of the line pass or something. Just an idea…..
6. I really can’t think of anything to add. Maybe some more elective choices for the sixth graders because I know a person who might come in to Escobedo as a sixth grader and she said that there really wasn’t a variety of elective choices for sixth graders.
7. I most certainly will remember Escobedo MS in a positve way. There is no reason not to. The teachers rock, the administration rocks, and the students rock. I’ve never had a better time at school. I don’t leave the school any day without laughing at least once, wait, scratch that, I don’t leave any CLASS without laughing at least once.
8. Mrs. Powers, if you want to come to my high school graduation, you can come!
Well, have a good summer! Escobedo ROCKS! I most certanly will come back next year for 8th grade!
May 30th, 2008 at 9:06 pmAs soon as I finished my very long comment I forgot something. You should add a Forensics club. They had Forensics at my Elementary school back East and I loved it. For those who have no clue what Forensics is, it is just basically public speaking. You pick a category, you pick a piece to recite, and you do it. I don’t know if they have a league here, but maybe we could start one? It would be so much fun. Just another idea I had on my mind……

I teach English Language Arts at our wonderful school, and one of my students has come to me to request that I sponsor a new club next year. She thinks, as you do, that we can recycle more than we do currently. So, to answer one of your concerns – we should be recycling bottles and plastic soon…

5.there is not that mch i would change except i wouldnt have tarty lunch and i would love it if you could look into using airdryers instead of paper towels. you might think its sill but i feel very strongly that paper towels are not needed i myself never use them. my last principal told me that it was a stupid idea but i still have faith and even if you dont ger airdryers i will eventually get one principal or one place smewere to stop using pasper towels.

This year i made new friends that i hated last year. I think I should have picked the friends i have this year, than the friends i had last year. My teachers are very good to me…except my math teacher. Not saying who.
My favorite teachers are Dr. Peters, Mrs. Lucero, and Mr. Oberg. I think you are a very great princeable, and you dress GREAT!!!!!

I think our school is verry frindly I have a bunch of friends this year!Ihave made soooooooo many friends this the best school! My classes are challging enough I look forward to the chalenge every day.Yes I do I like all of my teachers except my math teacher!I have never noticed a student with out a friend because our school is such a great place to maake friends. I love how Mrs.Baca plays music in the libray thats really cool.And also lets us eat lunch in there.I think that she should paint the window frames bright red. I would nominate Mr.Oberg because he makes sure he always says hi to everybody and he is also verry funny! The stuff we will have at our table at Thanksgiving would be turkey [of corse],ham ,mashed potatos ,cornbread ,greenbeanswith fried onions on top , carnberrys ,stuffing and our huge famliy of 30 people. My famliy normally goes to Flod land Park to take pitures togive to my grandma for christmas.then my whole famliy comes over to watch the thanksgiving parade. I love it because all of my famliy is together and it makes me feel warm inside. Well I am having a great year and can’t wait for another.
