WOW! What’s up with all the smoking research?

Boy, I have been in lots of classes lately that are doing some amazing research on smoking. I even got to participate in some of the 8th grade health class debates on smoking. Here were some of the questions we debated:

1. Should smoking be allowed in casinos?

2. Should pregnant women be allowed to smoke?

3. Should parents be allowed to smoke in the car when little kids are present?

4. Should smoking be allowed in public places?

5. Should the smoking age be raised from 18 to 21?

6. If you get sick as a result of smoking, should your insurance have to pay for it or should you have to pay for it?

We had some great discussions! We have smart 8th graders here at Esco. BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK? Like I told the 8th graders- it is their job to THINK, QUESTION, FORM OPINIONS, and CHALLENGE WHAT THEY THINK IS WRONG in our school, community, and society. (Read, write, think, discuss…that’s how you get even smarter). Let me hear from you!

    1 No it should not.
2 Of course not because it will mess up the kid.
3 NO NO NO NO NOO because thay are breathing secondhand smoke.
    4 I say no.
    5 Yes I think so.
6 You shauold have to pay for it because it is your problem.

  2.   Ragen J. Says:

    1. NO!! Smoking should not be allowed in casinos it is horrible for second hand smoke is bad for many people around you every time you smoke!!!
    2. NO!! Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant sould SO NOT SMOKE!!!
    3. I think that is a very bad idea to smoke when kids are around!!
    4. Like i said before second hand smoke is BAD!!!
    5. Really no one should be smoking in the first place!!!
    6. No you should have to pay for it yourself and not anyone else!!!
    I love Escobedo middle school!!!!

  3.   Orlando S. Says:

No i don’t think that smoking should be allowed in casinos because people who don’t smoke can smell it and inhale the nasty air.

  4.   Orlando S. Says:

No i don’t think that smoking should be allowed in casinos because people who don’t smoke can smell it and inhale the nasty air.

  5.   Orlando S. Says:

No i don’t think that smoking should be allowed in casinos because it effects othe people such as non smokers, smokers trying to quit, and most of all children.
No she shouldn’t be allowed to smoke because that can be dangerous and unhealthy for the baby and herself.
No they shouldn’t be allowed to smoke with their kids present because it could effect them and it could cause them to start.
No. i think that if someone is going to smoke and chooses to they should go somewhere private and away from people.
i think that if we were to smoke we would have to pay for it because it is our faults for smoking and getting sick.

  6.   Zoe M. Says:

    1) I do not think smoking should be allowed in casinos. Second hand smoking is just as worse, so at casinos, little kids who enhale the smoke, is basically smoking, which is horrible for a young ones breathing system.

    2) No! Pregnant women should not be allowed to smoke! It will cause the baby harm! They will be unhealthily small or stupid. It’s a sad thing, but It’s true.

    3) No Way! Like I said in number 1, second hand smoking is just as bad as smoking yourslef… It might give the poor little kid cancer and/or death. Please do not smoke in the car with a little kid, the air gets trapped so theres no fresh air in the car for the child to breath.

    4) Well with this question, I can say yes. BUT, there should be a different place for smokers, so non-smokers can walk through public places and not do second hand smoke, but smokers can still smoke, even though it kills their immune system.

    5) No, I think the age should be raised to 26. I see way to many kids underage smoking. It sickens me. 18 year olds will kill themselves faster, and we don’t want that. So I think we should raise the ago to 26.

    6) I say you should have to pay for it, not other peoples insuarance. It deducts their money, for something stupid you did…. it’s sad.

    THANKS!
    I ♥ Escobedo!

    Ms.Powers,
My reading teacher Ms. Kuzniak said that this would be a great idea to answer some of these questions. Since my dad has been smoking I have been on him about the cause and effect of smoking. Smoking shouldn’t be allowed any where near children. Parents should know that second hand smoke if far more dangerous then first hand. If you really need to smoke go some where else. In fact you shouldn’t even be smoking in the first place. Your only causing health problems for yourself. Heart Attacks and Strokes are more likely in smokers than any other. Most of the time smokers die from there addiction. So look at yourself and then look at your child do you wish the same faith upon them because of your smoking, or do you want them to grow strong and have no health problems at all. You decide what’s right for you and your family.

I’m in Ms. Kuzniak’s Reading and Language arts class and we are also talking about the causes of smoking. So, here are my answers to your questions:
    1) I don’t think smoking should be aloud in casinos because even if the resturaunts and food courts are nonsmoking, don’t they use the same filtering for their airconditioning as the rest of the casinos? And food courts are opened up to the rest of the casinos too!
2)Pregnant women should not be aloud to smoke because their babies can have problems and when they are born the baby will have to live around it’s mother, who is a smoker too!
    3) Parents should not be aloud to smoke in their car(s) while their kids are present because seconhand smoking is worst then firsthand!
    4) Smoking should not be alouded in public places. What would be cool is if public places had a metal detector that goes off every time a smoker walks in!
    5) I think there shouldn’t be a smoking age because people are just going to smoke either way like the average age of people to try their first cigarette is 11! I think no smoking should be a law!
    6) I think you should pay for it because you are the reason why you chose to smoke. You were the one wo should have thought about the problem you will have in the future!

    Thanks Mrs. Powers!

    1. no other people breate that air
    2. No because they are hurting their baby and themselves.
    3. No because their kids are breathing that air
    4. No because other people want the fresh air.
    5. I agree with rachel^ i think no smoking should be a law!!!!
    6. You should have to pay because you did it to yourself!!!

  10.   this is chris h hey hey hey Says:

1.NO WAY!!! because all it is doing is making other people breath second hand smoke.
2.NO all they are doin is killing their baby
3.no it is killing them again
    4.nooooo smoking kills people
5.oooooh yes kids at 18 dont realize what they are doing
6.no way man!!! it is their problem

  11.   carla c. Says:

    1.
No, no, and no. The main reason is because that little kids go there with their parents. When they go there they inhale the smoke. Which I think that’s smoking because smokers inhale the smoke which is the reason why they get cancer. When other people are around smokers they inhale the smoke.
    2.
Nooooooooooooooooooo. Pregnant women who smoke are going to get DEFORMED BABIES. Later on they will regret it.
    3.
No way. Those kids are going to have as much diseases as their parents have. The parents should stop smoking if they want to see their kids finish school.
    4.
I say a big no no. When your in a public smoking you should consider the children’s health as well as your own.
    5.
Like yes, because 18 yr. olds now get a little more years to live. You know what? It should be raised from 18 yrs. old – 50. Yeah, that makes me feel more safe.
    6.
You should pay for it yourself. You got yourself into this you will get yourself out. IT’S NOT FAIR!

Ms. Kuzniak’s Reading and Language Arts class was also talking about this to and I was in it.

Thank you alot Mrs. Powers! I had nothing to do at this time.
    XOXO- Carla C.

  12.   Madison S. period 5+6 reading and english Says:

    2. Should pregnant women be allowed to smoke?
NO, NO, NO. Pregnat woman shouldn’t be allowed to smoke because there bady can suffer from brain damages and under weight when born. Woman have no right to put there bady in danger just because they want to relax with smoking. Pregnant women shouldn’t be allowed any where near smoking places, bars, and etc.

  13.   C.J. M Says:

Smoking should only be aloud in some parts of casinos. Because if you smoke like out in the open where many people walk through, they just don’t want to smell that. And think of the kids that walk through the casinos and they think its cool. Then when they start smoking because of pepole that smoke in the casinos. They could get some sort of cancer like lung, bladder, or kidney Cancer. Your gonna wish that you didn’t smoke that one cigarette!!!

  14.   Brian F. Says:

    1. NO WAY! I think that there should be designated areas but not in the open because if a kid is gotin to the movies there are tons of smokers in that place
2.NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!
    3. I think that mothres and fathers don’t know what there doing which is stupid because if you smoke you kmow the consequenses.
    4. NO BECAUSE IT HARMS EVERYONE AROUND YOU
    5. YES becuse you can’t drink until 21 and then your still open to peer pressure at the age of 18.
6.Yes you should have insureamce to save you tons of money.

  15.   Eddie D. Says:

    1) No because it isnt fair for the people that dont smoke because off second hand smoke and the damages it does.
    2) No pregnant people dont get the right to smoke when there pregnant because they cause there baby dangerous hazards such as under weight.
3)No because kids shouldnt breath the are in because of second hand smoke so i think parents should stick away from the kids when they do.
4)No because we dont want to get damaged because you want to relax by smoking in places a kid can be so no they should ban it.
5)I think people shouldnt smoke PERIOD
6)I think you knew what was coming so it shouldnt be covered.

  16.   Shannon M. Says:

    1) I believe this should be the c asino’ s choice. It would be nice to have smoking c asino s (ick), and non-smoking c asino s, to satisfy the diversity of the population.

    2) Personally, I do not support pregnant women smoking. However, it truly should be the woman’s choice. To help the issue, doctors should definately advise, and repeatedly remind their pregnant patients to stay away from cigarettes.

    3) Once again, I believe this should be the parents choice. Although it is incredibly harmful to the child/infants health and immune system, it really is the parents choice.

    4) Smoking should be allowed in public places to an extent. Places like c asino s, clubs, and bars should have the option to be a smoking, or non-smoking facility. On the other hand, I opinionate smoking to be inapproipriate for places like day cares, or Chuckie Cheese’s.

    5) I, personally, don’t see a problem with the smoking age to be leveled at 18. By that age, citezins legally become an adult, and should be capable of determining the choice independently.

    6) I believe you and the insurance company should make that choice before hand. Smoking, in particular, should be arranged in the company’s contract, and discussed accordingly.

  17.   Emily A. Says:

Smoking should definitely not be allowed in casinos unless they take out the bowling alleys and movie theaters and restaurants because parents bring their KIDS! there and their inhaling all that smoke. If smoking isn’t allowed in restaurants, then it shouldn’t be allowed in any public place, including casinos.

Its up to pregnant women weather they want to smoke or not. no matter weather your pregnant or not, its always you choice to smoke so if you want to have a chance in purposely harming your baby, you can do that, but I’ll give you the consequences that can come from it but in the end, you make the final decision.

Smoking should not be allowed in public places because if you want to harm yourself then that’s your buisness and problem but society shouldn’t let you harm other people.

They should make smoking as legal for your age as late as possible, but with the voting and army thing being at eighteen, it seems like all choices are made at eighteen so I suppose it could stay the same.

once again you shouldn’t but like with the pregnant woman thing, its your choice weather you want to harm your kids or not. I’m going to tell you what your doing is wrong but I’m not going to stop you.

Finally, I think because people are getting diseases from making stupid choices like overeating and not taking care of yourself, reckless driving and taking in too much alcohol, and insurance pays for it too. So, until insurance stops paying for medical injuries from stupid mistakes, they should continue paying for smoking.

  18.   Breanne Says:

I believe that smoking should be illegal no matter where you are. It is one of the few things in this world with no plus side. All it does is create cancer, death, and disabilities. The only positive for some people is that it helps them relax, but there are much better ways to do that such as yoga, sports, movies, music, etc. It’s also an extremely addictive habit. Some people even do it when driving which isn’t very intelligent smoking up your car and causing a distraction. Not to mention the smell and what it does to your mouth.
