Ratings for movies…do you think they are helpful?

So, I was having a conversation with a few of our Office Aides about movie ratings. My question to them was, “Do you think only 13 year olds (and older) should see PG-13 rated movies?” If not, why?

I’d say that the answer would be no surely. In an educational setting absolutely and if it was a private setting then that would be the exclusive domain of the parents. I guess its a bigger issue with the internet and media items being available – youtube for instance dosen’t really have a block. Thought provoking.

No I don’t think only 13 year olds should be able to see PG13 movies. Some kids and teenagers are mature for their age and shouldn’t be held back by an age limitation if they think they are able to handle it. Parents don’t even abide by the ratings anyway most of the time. I don’t know one person who hasn’t been able to see a movie because their not 13 yet. In this day and age PG13 is the most produced movie rating out there…(that i’ve seen). It wouldn’t be smart for a movie theatre to enforce that because they would lose a majority of their sales. PG13 is looked over, it’s as if it isn’t there anymore.

No I do not think ratings are appropriate.I personnaly think that it all depends on your parant’s and how you are raised. If your parent’s allow you to see the movie then you should. If your parent’s dont allow it then don’t. Also if you think that the movie you want to see is to scary or u have a weak constitution then do’t watch it.It all depends on your jugment and how you look at it.I think there shouldn’t be any ratings. Down with ratings such as pg-13!

I think that ratings have pros and cons. It honestly depends on the child or group of children and how and where they were raised. Obviously a group raised more in a ghetto type atmosphere will probably have been exposed to more of life then someone who has been sheltered all their life. Overall it should be up to the parents and how they feel.
